Stay safe on roads, walkways this winter

As winter trudges on most of us have adapted to the colder, darker environment — living a nocturnal life, being more comfortable driving on snow and ice and finding ways to keep recreating.

However, we’d like to remind residents and drivers that adapting to winter doesn’t mean we can forget about those who may be traveling on foot, bike or ski when we get behind the wheel.

In winter it is easy to get into a tunnel vision mode where you might not look for pedestrians as much as you would during the summer. Our attention is devoted mostly to where ever our headlights are beaming.

But, please remember there are many who need your attention — school children walking home, runners, bicyclists, skiers, snowmachiners and others. This is especially important considering that the Unity Trial is being plowed on a regular basis to allow better access.

Be courteous to pedestrians even though it might be an inconvenience. Drive slower. Stop before you cross the sidewalk, look and then approach the road. If you see someone not being safe in their travels, give them plenty of room before you navigate around them. Chances are they’ll get the hint.

To that end, we’d like to remind those traveling on foot, ski, or snowmachine that they have a duty to make themselves visible as well. Wearing reflective, bright clothing, using a headlamp and being aware of your surroundings is important. You can do a lot to help the situation.

With a little precaution we hope we can avoid a tragedy and get everyone to spring without incident, safe and sound.
