Tough choice for Soldotna voters

Posted: February 21, 2013 - 3:03pm  |  Updated: February 22, 2013 - 8:37am

Here’s the good news: Soldotna voters have two excellent choices on the April 2 mayoral special election ballot.

And the bad news? Voters will have to decide between two excellent candidates.

Nels Anderson and Dave Carey have filed to run for mayor of Soldotna. The winner of the special election will fill the remainder of the term for the seat left open when voters sent Peter Micciche to Juneau to represent the area in the state Senate. The term is up in October 2014.

Anderson and Carey have had long careers dedicated to public service, both in their professional and personal endeavors.

Anderson has served the area as a physician, and in elected office for 15 years on the board of education and three more on the Soldotna City Council. He’s also served as a mentor to a generation of young men as a longtime scoutmaster.

Likewise, Carey taught and coached in the school district for 25 years, and has served as Soldotna mayor and borough mayor, among other elected positions. His public service also includes numerous volunteer efforts, and he lists the Soldotna Elks, VFW and Friends of the Soldotna Library among his current service organization memberships.

According to the city of Soldotna’s website, the mayor serves as the ceremonial head of government, executing official city documents on authorization of the governing body. The mayor presides over council meetings, may take part in discussion of a matter before the governing body, may vote in the case of a tie, and has limited veto power.

Certainly, both candidates are well qualified to serve in that role for the residents of Soldotna. An opportunity to learn more about the candidates’ views is coming up at a Soldotna Chamber of Commerce forum on March 12 (call the chamber at 262-9814 for more details).

And if you’re a registered Soldotna voter, remeber to cast your ballot on April 2.
