What others say: Digital learning initiative would improve access to education

Alaska has its great teachers, the best of the best.

Gov. Sean Parnell recognizes that and wants to create access to them for all Alaska students.

He has started a statewide education initiative that will digitally link digitally teachers, courses and students in Alaska for a shared goal of excellence.

“Every Alaskan child, including those in rural communities, deserves access to a world-class education,” Parnell told the Alaska Federal of Natives Convention recently in Fairbanks. “It is time for bold solutions, and my administration is committed to going big into digital learning over the next five years to ensure all of Alaska’s children have access to the best teachers available.”

Parnell expects the project will attract Alaska’s top educators and make them available to all Alaska students. They will be in direct contact through interactive, digital learning.

The five-year project will involve innovative digital and distance delivery models, with an emphasis on middle and high school math and science classes.

This project undoubtedly will be exciting to the AFN and rural communities, but it means no less to larger school districts. It means that the quality of education will increase throughout Alaska.
