Letter to the editor: Cost of name, mascot change a concern

We are writing this letter to voice our opinion concerning the proposed Soldotna High School name/color/mascot change.

My wife and I spent 19 years as very active parents in the Kenai Peninsula School District schools with our 3 children. During that time we faced many short comings due to budget cuts both scholastically and athletically. It is beyond us to even count the number of hours or money we donated to help different programs succeed and thrive.

To spend any money on a name/color/mascot change, with a 1.24 million dollar school district budget deficit is ludicrous.

We sympathize with the families that are affected by the Skyview High School closure. The decision to close Skyview due to low attendance is an economic decision that we understand and agree with. All over the country schools have closed for the very same reason, but school districts have not changed the other schools name/color/mascot. What is this teaching our students and what is it accomplishing?

To continue with this decision is absurd in our opinion. We urge everyone to get involved, and do not let other people make the decision to spend our money irresponsibly.

Please use our hard earned tax dollars to educate our young adults. They are our future!
