Letter to the editor: SoHi should remain SoHi

When Gilbert high school (my alma mater) closed due to financial constraints all across northern Minnesota in the early 80s, we combined with rival Eveleth and became the Eveleth/Gilbert Golden Bears. While it was a tough pill to swallow for everyone, in hind sight this made the most sense with Eveleth’s name ahead of Gilbert and Eveleth retained colors and mascot. If SoHi were to shut down and the kids had to go to Kenai it would make sense to me that it would become Kenai/Soldotna Kardinals giving recognition to the town of Soldotna but again Kenai would be the host and retain colors and mascot.

Nothing good comes out of changing Soldotna High School, both schools will have lost their identity. But with Skyview not taking on an identity with any particular town and given its proximity to SoHi I see no reason that this one high school shouldn’t remain Soldotna High School or SoHi Stars.
