Conservation actions not strong enough

The euphemism of the Kenai king salmon management now tagged a non-retention fishery was once called hook and release. This shortfall of kings will allow anglers to mortify only small and large kings now. This cannot bode well for building future returns. Few remember that the early run of Kenai king salmon was once as robust as the late run.

The escapement goals (5,300-9,000) was a reduction by the board of fish a few years ago that was aimed at pandering to angler opportunity. The run is shrinking and the kings are smaller every year. The present actions are weak considering the department’s “high level of uncertainty of meeting the minimum escapement.” Have fun at the Kenai Classic releasing all the wrong sized Kenai king salmon.
