I would like to express my thanks to the Nikiski community for their support of a flashing light at the intersection of Island Lake and the Kenai Spur Highway.
This intersection has been the site of many accidents over the years and, despite upgrades, has continued to be a place of ongoing accidents.
Children play close to the road and with no useable bike trail or wide shoulder, bicyclists and pedestrians are forced to travel on the road. Our business is on Island Lake and we often see vehicles traveling in excess of 55 MPH -- way over the listed 35 MPH.
Inattention and lack of awareness seem to precipitate these accidents.
Hopefully the installation of a large stop sign and a warning light before the intersection will better alert motorists to the oncoming traffic zone. This light was put in with little monetary outlay, demonstrating that as a community we can get things accomplished in a cost effective manner.
Special thanks to the Nikiski Senior Center, AA Dan's Construction, Larry Miller with DOT and the Nikiski Site Council, Mike Peek, Danny and Terra Murphy for their efforts to secure attention to this issue. Sincere appreciation to Rep. Mike Chenault and his staff for listening to our concerns, meeting with community members about the issue and finding a solution.
If one life is saved because of this light, I'm grateful to this community for finding a solution.
