Boys and Girls Club members enjoy fishing trip

Posted: August 30, 2011 - 9:17am

The board, staff and children of the 6 Boys and Girls Clubs of the Kenai Peninsula want to offer a heartfelt “thanks” to the Kenai River Professional Guide Association and event sponsors for donating a day to “Take Our Kids Fishing” for the fifth year. On Aug. 17, approximately 80 local Boys and Girls Club Kids enjoyed sunshine and a great day on the river fishing for Kenai River silver salmon.

Through a generous offer by the Kenai River Professional Guide Association, Boys and Girls Club kids were treated to a free day of habitat and water safety instruction, snacks, fishing on the Kenai River and a berbecue with their families and guides once the boats arrived from fishing.

This community never ceases to amaze me as folks consistently step forward to help others that may not always have the resources to enjoy all the Kenai has to offer. The kids of the Boys and Girls Club are grateful for the generosity of the guides. Instead of booking paying clients, guides donated the afternoon to take our kids fishing.

The outstanding effort by many included organizer Tami Murray, Dan Pascucci and the Kenai Watershed Forum with a message of environmental stewardship, the City of Soldotna for Centennial Park support and Safe Kids assisted with water safety. There were many sponsors; however the event simply would not have happened without the generosity of the guides.

KRPGA President Dave Goggia and his 19 additional guides ensured that the kids safely learned about the river, caught many silver salmon and most importantly, had a great time. It was clear to all that attended that the outing was geared specifically for kids to have fun. As the boats arrived from the fishing grounds they could be heard excitedly relaying stories to their friends and families about the fish they caught, or simply about the fun of being on the river.

There were many hands involved in the success of placing a huge smile on 80 young faces by taking our kids fishing. A big Boys and Girls Club thanks goes out to the Guide Association, the City of Soldotna, Kenai Watershed Forum, Safe Kids, Soldotna Chamber and the dedicated Boys and Girls Club staff and board. King Salmon Sponsors covering the costs of the event include ConocoPhillips, Arby’s, Central Peninsula Hospital, Peak Oilfield Services, Mike Navarre, Margaret Anderson and GCI.

Thanks also to Alaska Wildgear, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Sav-U-Mor and Coca Cola of the Kenai Peninsula (Odem Corporation) for their generosity in supplying beverages, gift bags, T-shirts and fun drawing items for the kids.

You all helped make it a very special day on the river for our kids and for that you deserve a big Boys and Girls Club pat on the back. We’ve helped teach our kids the value and importance of the gift of the Kenai River; a gift none of us should ever take for granted.
