Writer likes Navarre's experience

Posted: October 17, 2011 - 9:04am

During my years of public service, it has always surprised me, that less than 30% of the voters come out to vote. And that includes a mail in effort for the South Peninsula Hospital service area some years ago.

My parents, who emigrated in the 1920s, understood, not only how precious the United States is, but also that voting is the obligation of citizenship, to ensure a continuation of the freedoms we enjoy.

That said, I urge you all, please, take a moment and vote on October 25th. That is the mayoral runoff, and it is critical. My vote will go to Mike Navarre, because I believe he is the best qualified to run this multimillion dollar operation called the Kenai Peninsula Borough. His history in the legislature, his contacts there today, and good working relationship with the Governor will be very valuable in the years ahead.

As Borough Mayor in his first term, faced with the formidable quandary of beetle killed spruce trees, Mayor Navarre formed the Task Force that developed the Spruce Bark Beetle program that then Senator Ted Stevens was so generously able to fund over the ensuing years, that many in the borough have and still do benefit from. That is the kind of talent I believe we need in the mayor's office today. As a business man he also knows how to keep costs in check.

Please join me in voting on October 25th. Please vote for Mike Navarre.

The Borough budget has risen dramaticly every year !??!

I believe that our Borough government needs to be led in a new direction. Fred Sturman offers his service as Mayor to do just that.

Our Borough has subverted, watered down and attempted to repeal EVERY citizen initiative submitted in the last ten years. The budget has continued to grow significantly, while more groups have been funded and more projects proposed.

Our Borough must learn to respect the voice of the people and particularly the laws passed through the ballot by citizen initiatives. Mr. Navarre supported the repeal of our grocery tax initiative and the excuse that the voters did not understand what they had voted for. This excuse was also used to justify the term limits changes and the continuation of business as usual attitude by our Borough Assembly and Administration.

I support real change within the governance of the Kenai Peninsula Borough. Fred's candidacy will provide necessary change and force the Borough to rethink their continual acts of subversion against will of the people.

If you like the way things are, Mr. Navarre is clearly your choice. If you want your Mayor to fight for real change, Fred has demonstrated that he has the courage and determination to fight to support the will of the people.
