Remember our veterans every day

Whew! Veterans Day is past -- glad that's over ...

It's good that we have one day each year to recognize our veterans. That way we don't have to bother with them all year long.

I'm a vet. Twenty-plus years.  I don't ask anything for myself, but I do demand and expect that all of our veterans are provided for. If it's frightening for them to look back, it's terrifying for them to look forward. What awaits our vets? Cut-backs, understaffing, insufficient funds, loss of benefits, higher health care costs from the vet's pockets, and the constant threat that Congress will drop more and more of the due recompense for our veteran's blood, sweat, and tears. To measure the quality of a country, measure how it treats its veterans. Sure, we may brag how this country is better than others, but I'm afraid America has been found wanting.

It's not about free meals or parades. That's too simple. It's about recognizing our vets all year long in ways that really matter. Because they are honorable, they won't beg, and when offered, they'll probably decline. Though their voice is but a whisper, their actions have spoken louder than words could ever convey. You don't hear them, do you?

There's a calendar day for the great and the no-so-great American. It's too bad that the greatest, the best known and the most deserving of all Americans are remembered on just one day. Let us never forget that they served, fought, and gave their all every day.
