Elks honor community service

On March 23, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Kenai #2425, recognized individuals for their service in 2011-2012 to both our Lodge and to our community.

I am pleased to announce the BPOE Grand Lodge recognition of the following people:

Citizen of the Year -- Leslie Rohr, Executive Director of Love Inc.;

Elk of the Year -- Heather Pietro;

Officer of the Year -- Mary Jackson.

Both the Elk of the Year and the Officer of the Year are members of our Lodge and selected due to their contributions to Kenai #2425.

The Citizen of the Year Award cannot be presented to a member of the Lodge and I chose Ms. Rohr, the Executive Director of Love Inc. for several reasons. Primary among them is that Love Inc., and Ms. Rohr as their Director, quietly go about the business of helping out our community day and day out. They do that work without public recognition and our Lodge wanted to make their efforts known to as many as possible.

In fact, with funding support from our Grand Lodge, Kenai Lodge #2425 was able to host a dinner and provide Love Inc. with over $2,500 this past Christmas. I'm certain that those funds will go a long way to helping out the many needy families in this community.

As I turn over the gavel to my successor, I want to remind our neighbors in the Kenai community that Kenai Lodger #2425 will continue to practice the BPOE Motto of of "Elks Care - Elks Share".
