Alaska could do more to address domestic violence

Posted: May 31, 2012 - 8:31am

Timothy William's report, New York Times, May 22, describes the problems of domestic and sexual abuses in Emmonak and the struggles of women and children to survive in such a harsh climate. The Emmonak Women"s Shelter was defunded by the state of Alaska in 2005 and has since struggled to keep its door open to women. According to Lenora Hootch, the shelter's director, with federal and grant dollars drying up the shelter is looking at closing at the end of summer unless funding is achieved.

These facts seem to support the conclusion of Lolita Brache, chair, Families First, that Governor Parnell could be doing far more to prevent domestic violence in the state of Alaska. I agree with her conclusion and suggest he might start by honestly listening to women that give him feedback that he does not want to hear and then respond appropriately rather than reacting. In my opinion the Women's Shelter in Emmonak should be funded by us. The fact it is not funded by Alaska seems hypocritical to me.
