Last week, during the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly meeting, Mayor Navarre read three proclamations. Two concerned behavior I have observed over my lifetime, Domestic Violence and Workplace Bullying. Assembly member Linda Murphy made comments about the Mayor’s proclamations. She commented how she experienced domestic violence, at a time, when it was not talked about. She also stated how the mayor was going to show us where all the bullies are. She chuckled at the end of her second statement. She acted like she had no clue, what the mayor was referencing.
After hearing testimony from a victim of workplace bullying, Ms. Murphy apologized for her off the cuff remarks concerning bullying. I appreciate her apology. However, it raises the question of whether she has been listening about the devastating effects of workplace bullying prior to the Mayor’s Proclamation? Has she ignored what people have been saying about Workplace Bullying over her months as Assembly member? Twenty years from now, will Ms. Murphy talk about the time when Workplace Bullying was ignored by politicians as they ignored Domestic Violence in the past? Ms. Murphy will do well to listen to the people and ignore the experts that tell her everything is well and just ignore Workplace Bullying.
