Firing of librarian a mistake that should be corrected

This letter to the editor is for the patrons of the Soldotna Library. For yet unknown reasons, an outsider lawyer, Mark Dixon, now Soldotna City Manager, has summarily fired a stalwart of the Greater Soldotna Community without cause, two years before her retirement, devastating a loyal and effective employee. Librarian Terri Burdick is (was), without doubt, one of the most competent and capable Soldotna employees in her job, even without a library science degree. Before Librarian selection, she was the pseudo-librarian for more than 10 years, even though both her predecessors did have a degree. Terri was knowingly selected as Librarian over other qualified candidates because of her extensive librarian experience, the many innovative and unique programs she personally instituted during her tenure, and the benefits of those programs to the Community. If not rectified, this tragic, stupid event will destroy the 30-plus year career of a very productive and sensitive young woman, which anguish will live with her forever! Of all the Alaskans I know, Terri Burdick absolutely does not deserve such barbaric treatment!

For these reasons, I believe the Greater Soldotna Community should petition the Soldotna City Council to request Mark Dixon’s immediate resignation.
