Response to weekly question

This letter is in reference to your “question of the week” concerning a divider on the Sterling Highway between Soldotna and Sterling. In 1990, when I first arrived in Soldotna, there was a highway project in progress to widen the road and make it 4 lanes plus a median and turn lanes. The rights-of-way had been acquired and the utilities (HEA and Telephone Utilities) were in the process of moving to the edge of the new right-of-way. While I agree that something needs to be done to improve safety on the road, even DOT feels the completion of the job started in the late 1980s is the best solution.

Instead of wasting valuable budget dollars on a temporary fix, why not spend what they have this year on extending the four lanes as far as the money will go. Let’s not continue to spend money on studies and temporary fixes when improvement can be made with that money.
