Recently, I started catching up on a couple of minor medical issues and started with a visit to a local Physicians Assistant. After a while he came in and discussed my problem and we talked for about ten minutes and he left and wanted to refer me to another Physician for a consultation and some additional testing. The clinic advertised the first visit free, I was willing to pay, but they said no you are good to go. About a month later I received a bill in the mail for $302 for about a 10 minute visit. Later in the week I went to the dentist, and they quoted me over $4,000 to repair one tooth and fix a small cavity. This started me thinking about the cost of health care and what I would have done if today I had small kids and we were first starting out. How would I have been able in, today’s market, to take my kid to the PA for an issue? At today’s minimum wage $302 is about a week’s pay before taxes, $4,000 is about 13 weeks’ pay. Let’s double it and say, I made a generally local wage of $15.50 an hour, to pay those medical bills I would still have to work 20 hours in one week for the PA and 258 hours for the dentist. This is absurd, I have no idea if Obamacare is the right way to go, but I do know that any hard working family, especially with small kids, who get the flu or a cavity without health care in this state are in an impossible situation.
