Loose dogs a danger on local trails

I have been a runner for forty years, and one of my favorite places to run is on our Tsalteshi Trails system. I’m very proud of our trails, and have been very supportive as they have grown and improved. This year we’ve been blessed with a long fall season, which makes the running out there even better.

That being said, I won’t run out there again. Three weeks ago, I was the victim of an unprovoked attack by two unleashed dogs while finishing my morning run, which resulted in two hours in the emergency room.

At the time, I figured that it probably wouldn’t happen again in my lifetime. Then this morning, three weeks to the DAY and almost to the minute, I was attacked again by a different unleashed dog. No blood this time, just a lot of concern. I am good friends with the owners involved in each incident, and hold no animosity towards them.

I don’t want to have to run with bear spray or a pistol as protection against a dog on my neighborhood trails. There are many other places where I can bang out a few miles and have a good start to my day. It’s been a good run, but it’s over. If you choose to recreate alone or with your families and friends on the trails, well, as they used to say on NYPD Blue, “Hey, be careful out there.”
