Proposed law would encourage culture of respect

Lolita C. Baldor’s article “Culture of disrespect fuels academy sex assaults,” (Clarion, Jan. 10) should be required reading for all Alaskans. It is particularly relevant for several reasons. The first of course is all the current sexual abuse scandals being reported not only in the military academies but also in the military services. The Department of Defense’s annual report describing the latest is due out.

Secondly Representative Geran Tarr is introducing Erin Marryn’s Law to our Alaska Legislature. Marryn’s law has been enacted by 8 states and is designed to make children and adults aware of the magnitude of sexual abuse and to create a culture of respect for all people. In my opinion Alaska and the world will be a much better place if this law passes our Alaska Legislature.
