Superheroes appreciate the support

Posted: August 21, 2014 - 7:27am

This past Saturday, August 16, 2014, Kenaitze Indian Tribe had their second annual Superhero 5K to support their CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) program. It was quite the site! 88 runners donned their capes and superhero garb and set out from the Park Strip to complete the 5K course through the streets of Kenai. I could not help but be overwhelmed with excitement and thankfulness. It is because of the generosity of individuals and businesses in Soldotna and Kenai that we were able to raise over $3,500 for foster children in our community.

Major sponsors for the event include Alaska Correctional Officers Association, Inc., Lambe, Tuter, & Wagner, CPAs., Five Star Oilfield Services, RGB Enterprises, LLC., Pizza Boys, PacFitness 24/7, Three Bears Alaska, Road ID, Jumpin’ Junction, Artistic Puppy, The Fitness Place, Fred Meyer, Gamma’s Design, IGA Country Foods, Odie’s Deli, Renewal Skin Care, Safeway, Save-U-More, CIRI Alaska Tourism Corporation, C-Cups Specialty Coffee, and Sportsmen’s Warehouse. These sponsors helped provide prizes for our costume contest, fun family activities after the run, food and beverages for our barbeque, equipment and supplies for the run, and coupons/incentives for participants. We also appreciate the Peninsula Clarion and KDLL public radio for their help with educating the public about the race and our CASA program.

At the end of the run, about the time we were finished cleaning up from the event, Amy Burton, NORWEX Independent Sales Consultant and Soldotna resident, presented us with a check from NORWEX for $5,000. Mind blown!

To these sponsors and to all the participants and volunteers we say chiqinik – thank you. Thank you for your generosity and for your continued support. With the money raised from this event we will be able to provide foster children and youth in our community with the opportunity to participate in activities such as sports, camps, and prom. We will also be able to provide more children with something every child deserves – a caring and compassionate adult who looks out for their best interest. We look forward to continuing partnerships for next year’s Superhero 5K. Chiqinik!
