Recently, the Alaska State House Finance Committee held public testimony on one of its house bills. The Chair was Representative Alan Austerman. The exact bill and of what it entails is not important. What is important concerns the Committee’s actions during the public testimony. Because of the inaccessibility of Juneau, our public testimonies consist of citizens gathering at their local legislative office and awaiting to be called upon by the Committee Chair. This public testimony was held for two afternoons, 1:30-5:15 both days.

Shame on you, Kenai Peninsula Borough. Threatening to foreclose on my property because I owe you $9.73. Seriously? And on behalf of many others whose names and addresses have been publicized in the paper with similar microscopic balances due, I’m offended and disgusted. After all, a candidate for the Soldotna mayor’s office recently stated in an interview that there is a $31 million surplus in the property tax account for the borough. But you are going to foreclose on my property for $9.73?

The opinion piece in your February 28 issue on the proposed constitutional amendment, while factual on some things has some serious flaws.

In the second paragraph the author asserts that after the House and Senate pass the legislation it becomes law. It in fact gets referred to the people for ratification, appearing on the ballot in 2014. It is a big step and one that demands the 9 months of inquiry and debate the legislation if passed will be afforded. The people have the final say.

Central Peninsula Health Foundation would like to thank Soldotna-Kenai USBC Women’s Bowling Association for donating $965.00 in support of local breast cancer patients. The women’s local bowling association raises money for Breast Cancer Awareness and this last year voted to donate the proceeds locally. These funds will help provide direct support and treatment for local Kenai Peninsula breast cancer patients.

These women bowlers deserve our gratitude for everything they do to support residents of the Kenai Peninsula who are affected by breast cancer.
