What happened to the '3 o'clock phone call'?

My memory may be fading a little, but my first president was FDR. And over the years, I can’t think of any one of the Presidents not answering that call. But I think we may have had a disconnect with our long run of the U.S. working around the clock in emergency situations with the Benghazi attack killing 4 American patriots who felt they were in a situation of being taken care of. I know for a fact that many of our previous leaders did everything possible to assist in any situation threatening American citizens no matter where they were in the world.

D.A.R.E. program reaches for the stars

I am proud to congratulate the newest D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) graduates from Nikiski North Star Elementary. Fifth graders in Mr. Floyd’s, Ms. Matson’s and Ms. Barnes’ class successfully completed the 2012 D.A.R.E. program. These students are pledging to stay away from drugs, alcohol and smoking, as well as making smart life decisions.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Kenai Elk’s Club for graciously funding the purchase of items needed for this program to be a success! Thanks for your continued support!

Bill will harm Alaska fisheries

Gov. Parnell has proposed legislation allowing cruise ships to dump “partially” treated sewage and heavy metals in Alaska state waters. HB 80 would overturn a citizens’ initiative regulating the cruise ship industry. As a commercial fisherman, I strongly oppose HB 80. This act will harm Alaska’s fisheries.

Peninsula Spay/Neuter Fund grateful for year of support

This is to thank everyone who has helped the Peninsula Spay/Neuter Fund over the last year. With the help of Jane Stein and Bridges Community Resources, I started the Fund on October 28, 2011 with a name, an idea and $100. After working at a local Veterinary Clinic for more than 10 years and volunteering at the Kenai Animal Shelter for two, I realized I had to do something to get to the root of the problem of the hundreds of homeless/abandoned/neglected animals on the Peninsula — uncontrolled/unplanned breeding and unneutered/unspayed dogs and cats.

Cruise ship regulation roll back is bad news

The idea that Peter Micciche could somehow protect the southern peninsula from cruise waste by exempting Kachemak Bay from a proposed roll back of water quality standards for cruise ships is ludicrous. Tides anyone? Besides the people of Alaska voted for the standards to protect fisheries and water quality. This is another classic case of the people being sold out to special interests. It is a bad bill and bad news for Alaska.

Alaska has its own fiscal cliff

Drastic spending cuts and higher taxes all around have been momentarily avoided in Washington, D.C., but in Alaska we’re still dealing with our own version of the fiscal cliff. It’s pretty clear that spending must be curbed, but there’s a real division in our state government on whether to reduce certain taxes – namely ACES, or Alaska’s Clear and Equitable Share.

Column bears repeating

Having taken Les Palmer to task for what I considered to be a particularly inane column in your February 1st edition, it is only right that I should comment on his column, entitled “Gun control begins at home,” in your February 8th edition. In this column, it would have been easy for him to have taken the NRA position, and I’m sure that would have brought him many plaudits from your readers. Instead, he acknowledges that there is a gun problem in our country, and we need to deal with it.

Issues of violence can't be solved with an 'easy' button

A teacher in Loveland’s Mary Blair Elementary School, Leavenworth, Colo., kicked a 7-year-old student out of school for pretending to throw a hand grenade. Sounds kind of crazy right? A sure sign of a society gone crazy is when it allows anyone to pretend to kill anything. With that said, why would we even need to pretend to kill something? Isn’t it bad enough that we have to kill sometimes to live on planet earth but why would anyone need to pretend to kill a person, a bird, a bug or anything?

Legislature needs to focus on education issues

Like everything else in Alaska, the state’s education problem is big. Despite being one of the richest states in America (CNN News), Alaska has one of the lowest graduation rates in the country (U.S. Department of Education). But more distressing than lagging behind the poorest states is the undisputable fact that education is not a priority for Alaska’s lawmakers.
