Spring trout fishing warms up, closures ahead

Posted: April 17, 2013 - 7:43pm  |  Updated: April 18, 2013 - 9:17am

Rainbow trout fishing action on the upper Kenai River is beginning to pick up as fish make their annual migration out of Kenai and Skilak lakes and into the main stem of the river, and up the Russian River, for spawning.

Anglers can try fishing white or brown flesh patterns or natural patterns like leeches, smolt or sculpins near the Kenai River bridge at Cooper Landing or at the far end of the Kenai-Russian confluence near the ferry wire.

Fishing might be slow as the river’s water level is extremely low, in part due to the cold spring.

The upper Kenai River — from Skilak Lake to Kenai Lake — will close to all fishing from May 2 through June 10. The upper river will open on June 11 to trout and salmon fly fishing.

Anglers should also be aware of the May 2 through June 10 area closure from the outlet of Skilak Lake to the Upper Killey River. That portion of the river will also open on June 11.

Anglers are also reminded to update their fishing license, if they have not done so, and to be bear aware as the weather warms.
