School board to meet

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. at 148 N. Binkley St. in Soldotna (unless otherwise noted.)

Connections Homeschool Program

Friday 3-4th Graders will be attending the Kenai Fjords field trip and pre-schoolers are going to the Sea Life Center in Seward.

May 24 is an In Service Day.

May 25 is the Last Day of School and Awards Chapel.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science

Don't forget the End Of Year barbecue on Wednesday, May 18, from 6 to 7 p.m. This is an excellent and fun way to end the school year and also a great opportunity for our new families to meet other families and staff members. The PTA sponsors the event and will provide the hot dogs. They are asking that families with the last name beginning in A-L bring a side dish and M-Z bring a dessert. This will be an outdoor event so dress for the weather.

The 5th and 6th grade concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. at KCHS on Tuesday, May 17.

The annual bike rodeo will be held May 18 and 19 for 1st through 4th grades. Bike safety will be taught in the classrooms on May 18, and the next day students are encouraged to bring their bikes and helmets for the outdoor activities, which will include bike inspections and registration. If your child does not have a helmet there will be some available for purchase on May 19. The cost is $5 and must be given to his/her teacher before the 19th. The Kenai Moose Lodge will provide a hot dog lunch for all grades that afternoon -- hot lunch will not be available that day.

Thursday, May 19, is our Sixth Grade Celebration at 6:30 p.m. Join us as we say farewell to our wonderful 6th graders.

May 20 is Spirit Day. Staff and students are asked to wear their favorite color, school colors or dress up!

There will be many walking field trips through to the end of school so be watchful of the weather and dress appropriately.

Our PTA is helping to provide new playground equipment and have done so many wonderful events to raise the funds. Their latest endeavor was entitled Pennies for the Playground, a competition between all classes. Each class had a water jug and students brought in spare change. At the end of the competition the total raised was $1,268. Thank you everyone! The students will start the next school year out with new playground equipment!

The last day of school is Tuesday, May 24, and this is also Beach Day for all classes! Hot lunch will not be served on this day so sack lunches are required.

Kalifornsky Beach Elementary School

The RIGS Assembly is today, Monday, at 1:15 p.m. in the gym.

Ms. Balise's class are having their annual "Egg drop" competition on Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Sixth grade continuation is on May 18. Look for more information coming home with your 6th grade student.

Field days -- Kindergarten through 2nd grades on May 20 and 3rd through 6th grades on May 23.

The KPBSD Elementary Math Bowl was held in Seward on Thursday, May 5. Thirty-five teams of 4th through 6th grade students from the school district competed in Math Skills, Team Problem Solving and a Lightning Round.

Mr. Daniels would like to thank all of his wonderful parents who worked as volunteers and who worked with the child at home. It's been a great year! We are wrapping up the year with Alaskan animal research. Students are pooling all of their tools and talents this year to create one final PowerPoint presentation of their favorite Alaskan animal. We will invite classrooms and the principal in to share in the fun. We are headed to our Outdoor Education Camp next week with Mrs. Elmore's and Mrs. Klaben's classes to celebrate and learn about our environment.

May 24 is the last day of school. The PTA will be providing lunch for the students that day. You do not need to send lunch or lunch money.

Kenai Central High School

Monday, May 16, 6:30 p.m., is Kenai Central High School's annual Awards Night Ceremony to recognize our students' academic success. The ceremony will be held in the Renee' C Henderson Auditorium. If you have any questions, please contact Patti Lawyer at the KCHS Counselors Center.

Attention all students: yearbooks are on sale for $60. If students bring their money to Ms. Epperheimer, we will set aside a book for them. If you have any further questions, please contact, Dawn Brighton.

Last week, Erik Massey from Tesoro visited KCHS to talk to Mrs. Bergholtz's science class about the applications of organic chemistry and possible careers at Tesoro. Thank you.

Congratulations to: Raquel Young. Raquel Young has been selected as the 2010-11 ESPN 1400AM/KSRM Radio Group Broadcast Athlete of the Year in recognition of athletic excellence representing Kenai Central High School.

Congratulations to all of the seniors. Graduation practice is Monday, May 23, at 7:45 a.m. All seniors who are panning on walking during the ceremony later that evening need to be at practice that morning. The Graduation Ceremony will start at 6:30 p.m. in the Renee' C Henderson Auditorium.

The 2009/2010 school year is coming to an end. Thank you students and staff for making this year at KCHS, The bell schedule will be different this week to accommodate the students that are taking finals.

Kenai Middle School

As this year draws to a close we are planning our annual mini-course program and award day activities. Our annual 8th grade farewell will be held Friday, May 20, at 8 a.m. in the gym. Mini courses will be held on Monday, May 23, and Tuesday, May 24. The school-wide barbecue and awards assembly will be held on Friday, May 20. If you have a questions about the end of year activities or you would like to chaperone a field trip/mini-course please call the office at 283-1700. Students need to pay all of their fees prior to mini-courses and there are no refunds.

We are looking for help with the 8th grade farewell ceremony. If you have time on Friday, May 20, to set up, help with cake and punch, and clean up, please call Mark Manuel at 283-1726.

Mountain View Elementary School

Nikiski North Star Elementary School

Hobo Jim will perform for our students on Tuesday, May 17, at 2 p.m. in the gym.

The 5th and 6th grade promotion will take place on Thursday, May 19, at 7 p.m. in the gym. Families are invited to wish these students well as they move on up to Nikiski Middle/High School. Cake and punch will be served.

PreKindergarten graduation will be on Friday, May 20, at 10 a.m. This ceremony will take place in the gym. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony. For more information please call the school at 776-2600.

Redoubt Elementary School

Redoubt 5th and 6th band students will perform this evening at 6 p.m. in the gym. Everyone is invited.

Volunteers are needed to help with field day on Monday, May 23. Field Day for grades 4 -- 6 is from 9 -- 11:45 a.m. Field Day for grades K -- 3 is from 1 -- 3 p.m. Please contact Mr. Withrow at 260-4321 if you can help with either or both sessions.

The school picnic is Tuesday, May 24. Please call the school office at 260-4300 if you can help with this fun, end of year activity. Students need to bring $2 by Tuesday and will eat at their regular lunch times. Parents are invited. Cost for parents is also $2.

Awards assemblies are Tuesday, May 24. The assembly for grades 4 -- 6 is at 9 a.m., and for grades 1 -- 3 at 10 a.m. Parents are welcome to attend. Kindergartners receive their awards in their classrooms.

Students can still reserve a yearbook for $15 while they last.

All library books must be returned before students leave for the summer. Students are required to pay for lost books. If the book is later found and returned to the library in good condition, the student will receive a refund. Students should see Mrs. Hale or Mrs. Baldwin regarding lost books.

The lost and found will be emptied on the last day of school. All remaining items will be donated to local charities.

Skyview High School

Football parents will meet tonight at 6 p.m. in the library.

The music department will present its spring concert tonight at 7 p.m. in the commons.

Senior exams will take place during regular classes on the following days:

Tuesday -- periods 1 and 2; Wednesday -- periods 3 and 4; Thursday -- periods 5 and 6.

Academic and Senior Awards Night is Tuesday, 7 p.m. in the commons.

Softball hosts Homer Wednesday at 5 and 6:30 p.m. and Chugiak Friday at 7:45 p.m.

JV softball will host SoHi Thursday at 4 and 5:30 p.m.

May Rotary Students of the Month are: Tanner Brooks, Chelsea Belden, Sara Daigle, Holly Eyre, Mary Hauptman, Elisha Hollers, Troy Hope, Jordan Jones, Lane Kreider, Megan Neill, Daniel Rozak and Tamlyn Silva. They were treated to a pizza lunch last week, provided by the Soldotna Rotary Club.

The final deadline for seniors to have everything turned in is Friday.

Grades 9-11 will have final exams for periods 2, 4, and 6 Friday and for periods 1, 3 and 5 Monday, May 23.

Soldotna Elementary School

Soldotna Elementary students in grades 2 -- 6 have been reading and reading all this school year! After each book they took a comprehension test on their book to earn Reading Counts' points. This then earned them chances to win a ride on a CES fire truck, a luncheon and the honor of getting their Reading Counts certificate from Soldotna Mayor Peter Micciche. Winning students were randomly chosen from all Reading Counts participants. Ashlyn Branning, Hunter Crosby, Bailey Leach, Levi Hart, Isaac Larson, Taylor Morse and Nevaeh Bunch represented their classes and rode the fire truck to Soldotna City Hall on Tuesday to get their Reading Counts certificates. Library Aide Debbie Adamson facilitated the Reading Counts program and encouraged all readers!

Soldotna High School

All senior parents are invited to the After Grad Party meeting to be held Wednesday, May 18, at 5:30 p.m. in the staff lounge. If you cannot attend but would like to help, please contact Kim Senn, Kristina Rogers or Cheryl Tachick. We still need donations and chaperones!

There are still a few yearbooks available -- $65 in room 76.

Due to maintenance the pool will be closed the week of May 16 -- 20. Normal hours and lap swim will resume on May 23. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Student Council Elections will take place on Wednesday during advisory.

Senior exams are this week: Tuesday 1 and 2, Wednesday 3 and 4, Thursday 5 and 6.

9-11 final exams are Friday May 20 for classes 2,4, and 6. Monday, May 23, for classes 1,3, and 5.

Last day of school activities will be on Tuesday May 24. These activities will include games, activities, and a berbecue.

Graduation will be Tuesday May 24, 7 p.m. at the Soldotna Sportscenter.

All students in 1st -- 3rd grade will go to the Nikiski Pool and playground on May 20. Permission forms are needed.

Parents in Mrs. Holt's 1st -- 3rd grade class are invited to a Parent Night celebrating the students' most recent project completion. Students will share their research projects with parents at 5:30 p.m. on May 17.

Parents in Mrs. Hurst and Mrs. Atchley's 1st -- 3rd grade classes will be hosting an Author's Tea for parents on May 19 at 6 p.m.

Kindergarten "graduation" will take place in the library at 11 a.m. on May 23.

Parent Volunteers will be recognized at an all-school assembly on Monday, May 23 at 10 a.m. in the gym.
