Creating KPC scholarships leaves legacy for donors

Posted: May 16, 2011 - 3:11pm

There are a variety of reasons people decide to establish scholarships to benefit KPC students. Some do so in honor of a person as a memorial while others use scholarship award criteria to express their personal ideals, beliefs or passions. Over the years, many local individuals or families have established KPC scholarships.

Contributions can be made to existing endowed or restricted funds at any time. Gifts can be of any size and can be made as one-time donations or replenished annually. KPC's advancement office, working with the University of Alaska Foundation, can assist potential donors in reviewing existing funds.

Establishing a new scholarship, whether endowed or restricted, requires more financial commitment by the donor.

Establishing an endowed scholarship requires a minimum of $25,000. The funds are invested and scholarships are awarded from the interest earned, preserving the principal of the fund in perpetuity. This is the most long-term, monumental form of scholarship support.

Named, restricted scholarships are established with a minimum of $5,000. These funds are not invested, but donated directly into scholarships. These funds must be replenished with additional funds and must not fall below $500 or they are closed.

For more information about establishing or contributing to an existing KPC scholarship, contact the Advancement office at 262-0320 or e-mail give2kpc@uaa.alaska.edu.

KRC summer semester update

The Kenai River Campus will be open from 8 a.m. -- 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and will be closed on weekends throughout the summer.

The summer is broken down into two, five-week sessions. The first session semester begins on May 16 and will end on June 18; the second session begins on June 22 and will end on July 30.

Tuition and fees for the summer semester must be paid before May 24 or a $125 late fee will be assessed. If not paid before July 30, another $175 late fee will be assessed.

Kachemak Bay Campus expanding biological sciences offerings

Dr. Debbie Boege-Tobin, assistant professor of biology, would like Peninsula residents to be aware that she and other faculty will offer a cadre of biology courses next fall ranging from 1-credit surveys to in-depth, 3-4 credit upper division courses.

"KBC will also begin the first Semester by the Bay program this fall, so in addition to the upper-level (mostly seniors) from outside who will be enrolling along with our own biology majors, we're hoping perhaps that folks from our local scientific organizations, and/or interested community members might want to take one or two classes," said Dr. Tobin.

The one-credit courses being offered include cetaceans, mycology and birding. In addition, fundamentals of oceanography, marine biology, ichthyology and invertebrate zoology will be offered. These courses are three or four-credits and all but marine biology include lab and lecture components. All the courses are offered face-to-face.

For more information, contact the Kachemak Bay Campus at 907-235-7743.
