Homer softball sweeps Kodiak

The Homer softball squad picked up a pair of big wins in Kodiak, starting with a 23-0 win Monday and finishing with a 24-2 victory Tuesday.

The Mariners improved to 10-8 overall with the success.

In Tuesday’s four-inning win, Homer knocked out 18 hits to Kodiak’s six, and scored 13 runs in the first inning. Homer added two runs in the second and finished with nine in the fourth. Kodiak scored twice in the bottom of the second frame.

Annali Metz and Izabelle Hagge notched four hits apiece to lead the Mariners. Metz also had four RBI, while Hagge and Isabel Beach batted in three runs. Riley Walls, Malina Fellows, Elsie Smith and Metz all knocked out doubles.

McKi Needham earned the win on the mound with a single inning of work, striking out one and giving up a hit in 15 pitches. Hagge pitched two innings, giving up the pair of Kodiak runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out two. Metz closed with a scoreless inning, giving up two hits and two walks.

On Monday, the Mariners demolished Kodiak in a 23-0 rout that took only three innings to decide, outhitting the Bears 16-1 en route to the NLC win.

Homer dominated from the start, plating 14 runs in the first inning, then adding six more in the second and three in the third frame.

Needham hit 4 for 4 with four runs, while Mary Hana Bowe was 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBI. Bowe also walked twice.

In the pitching circle, Needham gave up one hit and struck out three in the scoreless start. Needham threw 25 strikes in just 29 pitches thrown.
