Blackburn throws far at Air Force

Soldotna High School graduate Paige Blackburn capped a successful junior year with the Air Force Academy track and field team by being named to the 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-District VII Team on June 2.

The team was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Blackburn made the second team.

In addition to being the top thrower on the track team, Blackburn has a 3.44 GPA in civil engineering.

She was the top Falcons athlete in all six of the throwing events and finished runner-up in the Mountain West Conference in the javelin. She also was a 2011 NCAA national semifinalist in the discus and javelin.

Throughout the season, Blackburn was able to move up Air Force’s all-time list in various throwing events. She is second in the indoor shot put, third in the weight throw, third in the outdoor shot put, third in the discus and fifth in the hammer throw.

In addition to the toss of 146 feet, 2 inches, that got her second in the Mountain West meet, Blackburn was fourth in the discus at 160—1, fourth in the shot put at 45—11 1-4 and ninth in the hammer at 170—7.

Skyview’s O’Guinn stars at UAA

Skyview graduate Ivy O’Guinn finished a solid first year for the University of Alaska Anchorage track team with an appearance at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 28.

O’Guinn competed in the 1,500 meters. She finished ninth with a time of 4 minutes, 32.59 seconds.

O’Guinn also was the only freshman to qualify for nationals in the 800, but she finished 16th in the preliminaries.

O’Guinn also received two nods on the inaugural U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association outdoor track and field Division II All-Region Team. Joining O’Guinn on that team with one honor was Kenai Central graduate Levi Sutton.

Sutton, along with fellow Kenai Central graduate Billy Kiefer, won relay titles at the 2011 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track and Field Outdoor Championships in mid-May.

Kiefer, a freshman, joined A. J. Allen, Shaun Ward and David Registe in winning the 400 relay in 42.20.
