Miners shut down Oilers

Mat-Su club takes sole possession of 1st place in ABL

Cam Kneeland broke a tie with a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifting the Mat-Su Miners to 3-1 win over the Peninsula Oilers in Alaska Baseball League action Thursday at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

Mat-Su improves to 9-3 in the ABL, moving into sole possession of first place, while the Oilers fall to 7-3 in the league and 12-5 overall.

It was the final contest of a four-game road trip in which Peninsula finished 2-2. The Oilers return home to host the Anchorage Bucs at 7 p.m. Friday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park and at the same time Saturday.

With the game tied at 1 on Thursday, the Miners loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth against Peninsula reliever Mark Winkelman.

After back-to-back singles by Tim Zier and Stephen Branca following a leadoff walk to Dominic Francia, Kneeland drove a single to left to break the tie. Kneeland finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs in a game in which neither team had an extra-base hit.

Kneeland's effort was enough support for the Mat-Su pitching staff, which allowed four hits. Matt Applegate earned the win in two shutout innings of relief, pitching the eighth and ninth.

Jeff Gonzalez received the start for the Miners, lasting five innings. He walked three and struck out two, giving up the lone Peninsula run in the top of the fifth on a Patrick Wisdom fielder's choice on a grounder to third.
Mike Miller, who reached third on a Chris Mallory bloop single, scored on the play to tie the game at 1.

The Miners took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Kneeland singled to left against Peninsula starter Kellen St. Luce, who lasted just 1 1-3 innings, walking three and allowing one hit.

Brandon Kizer threw four shutout innings on two hits out of the bullpen, striking out five without issuing a walk. Kizer was replaced by Cameron McVey, who took the loss in 1 2-3 innings.

It was the second straight loss for the Oilers, who were topped 4-2 by the Miners on Wednesday.
