Peninsula Oilers top Anchorage Bucs in 11th inning

Channing's go-ahead double wins it

Posted: July 16, 2011 - 5:15pm

The Peninsula Oilers blew a three-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday, but Troy Channing hit a go-ahead double in the 11th to preserve a 5-4 Alaska Baseball League victory over the Anchorage Bucs at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.
Peninsula is 22-9 overall, 15-6 in the ABL and has won a season-best eight consecutive games. The Oilers face the Anchorage Glacier Pilots at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mulcahy.
Friday's win gives the Oilers a four-game lead over the Mat-Su Miners (12-11), who play at 7 p.m. Friday, for the league's top spot. The Bucs slip 4 1-2 back at 11-11.
John Maciel pitched seven strong innings and was poised to improve to 3-0 in the ABL, but the Bucs stormed back in the home half of the ninth after Mark Winkelman pitched a scoreless eighth.
Peninsula reliever Tyler Blum, who has showed a tendency of getting into jams all season, blew the save.
Blum plunked Jake Valdez to lead off the inning, walked ensuing batter Davis Morgan and yielded an RBI-single to Ryan Palermo.
With the score 4-2, Logan Davis dropped down a sacrifice bunt to push runners to second and third. Peninsula third baseman Patrick Wisdom then booted a Joe Winterburn grounder, allowing a run to score.
Blum followed that miscue by hitting another batter, Matt Harjung, before Oilers coach Dennis Machado yanked the 6-foot-6, 270-pound left-hander. Reese McGraw entered with the bases loaded and issued an infield single to Tyler Wagner, bringing in the tying run.
The Bucs had a chance to win it during the next at-bat when a pitch got past Oilers catcher Manny Reyes. Winterburn charged home, but McGraw applied the tag on a throw from Reyes to preserve the game. Anderson then grounded out.
Channing finished 3 of 5 with two doubles and put the Oilers back on top with a double in the 11th off Hunter Lemke, driving home Wisdom, who reached on his fourth walk of the game.
Brandon Kizer pitched a perfect 11th to earn the save, while McGraw got the win. Lemke took the loss for the Bucs.
Maciel tossed 72 pitches, allowing one run on four hits over seven innings. The right-hander gave up just one hit after the second inning, when the Bucs scored their lone run thanks to three hits.
Maciel has now allowed two earned runs in 26 1-3 innings in the ABL.
The Oilers grabbed the lead in the top of the first when Tanner Rust made it 2-0 with a two-out, two-run single off Bucs starter Braden Shipley, who allowed three runs on six hits over four-plus innings. He walked six and struck out four.
Maciel allowed three hits in the bottom of the second, but the Bucs stranded two runners after scoring once.
Rust notched his third RBI with a single up the middle to score Wisdom in the third, giving the Oilers a 3-1 lead.
That's when Maciel settled in, facing the minimum 15 batters over his final five innings thanks to a pair of double plays.
Mike Miller, who entered the game with a league-best .419 batting average, bumped the lead to 4-1 with a single to right field in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Jeff Yamaguchi. Also leading the league with seven doubles, Miller finished 2 for 6 with a stolen base and a triple.
