Oilers finish road swing with 3-1 win

Channing’s three-run home run in first inning sparks victory over Glacier Pilots

Posted: July 21, 2011 - 8:00am  |  Updated: July 21, 2011 - 9:03am

Troy Channing hit a three-run home run in the first inning and the Peninsula Oilers' pitching staff shut down the Anchorage Glacier Pilots for a 3-1 Alaska Baseball League victory Wednesday at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The win keeps the Oilers (17-8 ABL) three games ahead of the Anchorage Bucs (14-12) for the league's top spot. The Mat-Su Miners are in third at 13-13, while the Pilots hold fourth at 13-17. The Athletes in Action Fire are fifth at 10-17.

It was the sixth and final game of a road swing for the Oilers, who are off today and host the Pilots at 7 p.m. Friday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

A night after they lost 6-4 in 13 innings to the Bucs, the Oilers made Channing's home run hold up with a solid pitching staff.

Channing, who finished 2 of 4, drilled his fourth homer of the season to give the Oilers a three-run cushion against Pilots starter Andy Grunewald, who took the loss in pitching 6 1-3 innings. Grunewald yielded three runs on six hits, four walks and two strikeouts.

Oilers starter Jordan Mills, who entered with a 0.82 ERA in league play, earned the win to improve to 4-0. Mills cruised through five innings before he lost his command in the sixth, hitting three straight batters to force in a run.

Brandon Kizer entered with the bases loaded and got a double to play and a strikeout to escape the jam. Kizer pitched two shutout innings before handing the ball to Reese McGraw, who also went two innings and earned the save.

The Oilers finished the six-game road swing with a 4-2 record, strengthening their hold for first place in the ABL.

Peninsula, which plays 10 games in as many days beginning Friday, holds a four-game lead over the Bucs in the loss column and a five-game lead over the Miners.

The Oilers don't face the Bucs again, but they face the Miners twice more.

Shortstop Mike Miller, the league's leading hitter with a .409 average entering Wednesday's contest, returned to the lineup after missing one game with an ankle injury he sustained during the ABL All-Star Game.

The Oilers had seven hits and left six runners on base, while the Pilots managed five knocks while leaving six on.
The Oilers enter the final stretch of the campaign with the league's best ERA.

This was the longest the squad has been on the road because it's played a heavy dose of home games thanks to the fact the Fairbanks Goldpanners aren't an official member of the league.
