Twins stay alive at state tourney

Local 9 run-rules West

The American Legion Twins stayed alive in the state tournament with a 15-7, seven-inning victory over West on Sunday at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage. The game was called after seven innings due to the mercy rule.

The Twins also caught a bit of a break later in the day when the South-Dimond game was postponed to today due to rain. The Twins were originally supposed to play the loser of that game today, but now the Twins play the loser of that game Tuesday at noon.

That gives the Twins pitchers an extra day to rest.

"It probably benefits us, other than we have to find something to do for an entire day other than sleep," Twins Post and team manager Lance Coz said.

The Twins are alive in the tournament due to the pitching of Mason Kanakis. Tay Harling got the start for the Twins and struggled, lasting just one inning and giving up six runs - four earned - on five hits.

Kanakis came on in the second and gave up a run as West went up 7-2. Kanakis then shut West out over his final five innings of work. He gave up just the one run and two hits in six innings.

"He was catching the front corner of the plate with his curveball and the umpire was giving it to him," Coz said of Kanakis. "As we got a bigger lead, we had to remind him to just throw strikes and let the defense back him up."

The Twins committed just two errors in the game. The local nine also had 12 hits to West's seven.

The Twins came back to tie the game with five runs in the top of the third. The Twins added three in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the seventh to finish off West.

AJ Hull finished 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBIs. Kevin Rowe was 3 for 3 with three runs.

Josiah Covey was 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs, while Shayne Miller was 2 for 4. Jake Darrow had a hit, two runs and three RBIs.

The Twins have to win three more games to get to the championship game.
