Glacier Pilots blank Oilers on 3 hits

1st-place Peninsula misses chance to gain in standings

Posted: July 26, 2011 - 8:00am  |  Updated: July 26, 2011 - 1:45pm

A group of six Anchorage Glacier Pilots pitchers shut out the Peninsula Oilers on Monday in a 2-0 Alaska Baseball League loss at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The game featured just three hits for the Oilers, four hits for the Pilots, and took just over two hours.

It was the first time the Oilers had been shut out since July 6 and it cost them a chance to gain ground in the Alaska Baseball League standings. The second-place Anchorage Bucs lost to the Mat-Su Miners on Monday, 8-4.

The Oilers fall to 19-10 in the ABL, while the Bucs stay 3 1-2 games back at 16-14. The Miners move to four games back at 16-15, and have a chance to further narrow that gap when the Oilers visit tonight at 6 p.m.

The Glacier Pilots improve to 16-18 and are 5 1-2 games back, while the idle Athletes in Action Fire sit 9 1-2 games back at 10-20.

The tone for the game was set in the first inning when Pilots starter and winner Andy Grunewald walked Mike Miller to start the game, when gave up a single to Chris Mallory. Three fly balls stranded Miller at second.

In the second, a pair of walks put Ryan McChesney at second with one out, but a fly ball and ground ball kept McChesney at second.

The Pilots got all the runs they would need in the third inning against Oilers starter and loser Gabriel Asakura. With one out, Kevin Hall walked. Matt Vinson tripled to score Hall, then Vinson came home on a single by Dustin Torchio.

Asakura went five innings and gave up three hits while walking three and striking out five.

Grunewald exited after the third inning and Ismael Castro pitched a pair of scoreless innings. Christian Belleque followed with a scoreless frame before the Oilers tried to rally against Cody Brown in the seventh.

With two out, Manny Reyes walked and Nate Ring singled. Miller then drove the ball to deep left field, but Vinson made an over-the-shoulder catch before spinning off the wall to preserve the shutout and - with Ring's speed - most likely the lead.

That would be the last major scare for the Pilots. Justin Kemp pitched a hitless eighth, and Trevor Bayless punctuated the shutout by striking out the side in the ninth.

The Oilers staff gave up just four hits. Cameron McVey yielded a hit in two innings, while Mark Winkelman pitched a perfect eighth inning.
