Allie Ostrander commands a strong lead on the way to winning the five-kilometer race Saturday.

Allie Ostrander lost her bearings. Angie Voight hadn’t been on the course in nearly five years. Didn’t matter. Ostrander won the five-kilometer race and Voight captured the 10-kilometer as more than 163 competitors turned out Saturday for the LeeShore Center’s Run for Women in Kenai. Ostrander, 14, finished in 19 minutes, 16 seconds, repeating as champion. Voight, 34, crossed the finish line in 42:53. “I have a really bad sense of direction, so I don’t even really know where I was,” said Ostrander, an incoming freshman at Kenai Central High School who won the event in 2010. “But it’s a pretty good course because it’s so flat.” Voight, who lives in Minnesota but has family in Sterling, returned to the course after missing the past few races because of school. The long-distance specialist said Run for Women is one of her favorite races. She first competed in the race 13 years ago. “I love coming here,” Voight said. “It’s a fun race, it’s well organized and it’s for a good cause.” The race, in its 24th year, is organized by the LeeShore Center. The Kenai-based center provides support for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Event organizer Kathy Tomrdle said the race is supposed to be fun, but also bring awareness to an important issue. That sentiment was echoed by Kenai residents Laurie Cowgill and Susan Rorrison. They walked the five-kilometer together, the first time either participated in the event, saying it was rewarding way to end the summer. Cowgill and Rorrison walk together to get exercise on a weekly basis. “Our goal was not to finish last,” Cowgill said, laughing. On a more serious note, however, they agreed the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault must be addressed. “It’s rampant in this state,” Rorrison said. On a drizzly morning, athletes raced across a flat course, wrapping through Kenai past the airport, Walmart and Kenai Central High School. Their times ranged from 19 minutes to 1 hour, 17 minutes, in the five-kilometer. The range was 42 minutes to 1 hour, 45 minutes, in the 10-kilometer. Although they crossed the finish line in different times, most racers sported grins as they took their final strides. “It was just a really fun deal,” Rorrison said. “What a nice way to end the summer.” Run for Women Saturday Five-kilometer 1.
