Birch Ridge reflects on inaugural Kenai Peninsula Open

Posted: August 25, 2011 - 10:22am

I hope I don’t disappoint the avid followers of this belligerent column, but I’m going to use this space to thank the people who made the first Kenai Peninsula Open at Birch Ridge Golf Course possible this past weekend.

Events like this can’t survive without sponsorship, and this year a number of local businesses contributed to the tournament’s success. So a special thank you goes out to Udelhoven, Jackson Oil and Gas, Arby’s, First National Bank, Odom, Buckets, Ryan Kapp of Edward Jones, the lovable ladies of Birch Ridge and Pete Sibolboro.

Of course, as the tournament director, I’m especially thankful to these businesses. Nobody wants to host a poor tournament, right? Believe me, this tournament would have been just that if not for sponsorship money.

The tournament itself provided the drama we had hoped for on the men’s side. Beau “dazed and confused” Forrest overcame a four-shot deficit with nine holes to play to edge Anchorage amateur Marcus Dolejsi for the Men’s Amateur title.

Moose Run professional Bryan Anderson took control of the tournament with the help of four consecutive birdies late in the final round, edging Rob Nelson, Rich “lippy” Lundahl and a number of other professionals to win the Open Championship.

The women’s side lacked some suspense as Ardie “juggernaut” Crawford demolished the field with her brilliant play.

Quickly, before we move on, I want to thank all of our participants this year. Hopefully everyone had a great time and enjoyed the excellent food, beer, awards and door prizes the tournament offered.

Senior League

The Birch Ridge Senior Tour witnessed 15 grumpy old men angrily hack their way around the golf course for another week of senior league action.

Tom Boedecker reigned supreme with a net 32 and captured the long putt at the ninth with a 12-foot bomb. Ed “agent” Robinson’s ball rolled within 19 feet of the cup for closest-to at the sixth and Chuck “easy” Rider hit a gorgeous shot for closest to at the eighth, a mere 49 feet away.

Tuesday Morning Ladies League

I want to thank the ladies for putting up with me in the shop this week in place of Katie. As you could tell I was quite sick and had my cranky pants on. I apologize.

Rita Geller, Cheryl “Thor” Hammarstrom and Tanya Boedecker teamed up to win the final ladies league week of the summer.

The girls brought pizza, salad and cake for the finale, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed. Special thanks goes out to Leona “eye of the tiger” Jackson and Tanya for organizing play each week. The ladies will continue to play each Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. until the golf course closes.

Tuesday Couples Night

A number of luxurious lovebirds showed up for Tuesday Night Couples action despite the questionable weather. This is where things get interesting. I spent last night in a Nyquil-induced coma and Pat Cowan, who usually fills me in on what happened, is in Anchorage. So I didn’t receive a write up detailing the night’s event and I have no clue who won or which couple got a divorce.

However, the pro shop was quite tidy this morning so any post-round marital arguments must have been at a minimum.

Birch Ridge Golf Committee’s Officially Unofficial Golf Rankings

Nothing noteworthy over the weekend on the professional circuits as both the PGA and European tours relaxed following the PGA Championship: 1. Rory McIlroy; 2. Luke Donald; 3. Charl Schwartzel; 4. Adam Scott; 5. Lee Westwood; 6. Jason Day; 7. Keegan Bradley; 8. Steve Stricker; 9. Dustin Johnson; 10. Ricky Fowler.

Golf Trivia

Answer from last week: Tiger Woods at the Greater Milwaukie Open.

Question: Who donated the money for the original PGA Championship trophy and purse? What business was he in?
