Kodiak volleyball sweeps Kenai Central; Nikiski splits road contests

The Kodiak volleyball squad swept Kenai Central in consecutive matches Friday and Saturday at Kodiak.


On Friday, the Bears won 25-11, 25-16 and 25-17. On Saturday, the Bears won 25-7, 25-10 and 25-14.

One of the matches counted toward Northern Lights Conference play.

The Kardinals host Homer at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Grace 3, Seward 2
Grace's Nicole Weisenfelder had 10 kills and 31 assists in a back-and-forth 3-2 win over the Seahawks on Friday.

The scores were 23-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-27 and 15-10.

Up next for the Seahawks is West Spiketacular beginning Friday. Soldotna, Skyview and Nikiski also will compete.

Nikiski 3, ACS 2
The Bulldogs defeated the host Lions in five games Friday in the Southcentral Conference opener. Scores from each game were not available.

Grace 3, Nikiski 1
By scores of 25-20, 26-24, 21-25 and 29-27, the host Grizzles edged the Bulldogs in Southcentral Conference action Saturday.

Nikiski dropped to 1-1 in the conference.

Bulldogs coach Amber Olivia-Douglas called it a dynamic match, fun to watch and competitive.

"We were a little bit sluggish and slow in the first two games," the coach said. "But the girls did a really nice job of flipping the switch in their head for the third game. They were playing with passion and fire."

Olivia-Douglas expects a competitive conference season, saying the teams are matched evenly top to bottom.

"I'm really pleased with the opening round of conference play," she said. "Our region is closely matched and really competitive. Right now it's
anybody's game, which is great."

Nikiski will compete in the West Spiketacular beginning Friday in Anchorage.
