Bulldogs dominate small-schools all-state team

Hartley, Johnson, Riddall win major awards

The all-state selections for small-schools football were announced Monday.

The all-state team was voted on by the coaches of the Greatland Conference. The combined small- and medium-schools all-state team, which was announced Sunday, was voted on by the Alaska Football Coaches Association.

Nikiski, which won the small-schools First National Bowl, dominated the small-schools all-state awards. The Bulldogs won three of the four major awards.

Nikiski also had seven of the 13 selections for the team on offense and three of 13 for defense.

Nikiski’s Stephen Hartley was named the offensive player of the year. In an indication of just how balanced and dominant Nikiski’s ground game was this year, Hartley did not make the all-state team on offense. Josh Brown made the team at fullback, while Kaden Spurgeon got the nod at halfback.

Hartley did make the defensive team at outside linebacker.

Lincoln Johnson was the lineman of the year. Johnson made the all-state team at tackle, long snapper and defensive line.

Other Bulldogs on the offensive all-state team are Colton Anderson at quarterback, Allen Oskolkoff at center and Henry Eide at guard.

The other member of the defensive all-state team was Spurgeon at inside linebacker.

The other major award winner was Barrow’s Nathaniel Samuelu as the defensive player of the year.

Seward’s lone representative on the all-state team was Dezmond Smith at utility player.
