Nikiski wrestlers take ACS Invite

Posted: October 29, 2011 - 11:04pm

Kaden Spurgeon, Corey Green and Lincoln Johnson won individual titles to lead the Nikiski wrestling team to the team championship at the Anchorage Christian Schools Invite on Saturday.

The Bulldogs finished with 190.5 points, topping runner-up Dillingham (161.5) and third-place Valdez (153). Skyview placed fifth.

The ACS Invite is one of the state’s largest tournaments and is a good indication of how teams around the state stack up to each other.

Spurgeon defeated Devon Phillips of Kotzebue by technical fall, 22-7, to win the crown at 152 pounds. Green defeated Cordova’s Mason Kimber 18-7 to win gold at 160. Johnson, meanwhile, pinned Mt. Edgecumbe’s Shyler Johnson in 2 minutes, 51 seconds, winning the championship at 182.

Nikiski’s Henry Eide reached the finals at 285, but was pinned by Jaylin Prince of Mt. Edgecumbe.

Floyd Armstrong of Nikiski took fourth at 152, while teammate Jesse Eide grabbed the same slot at 195. Jonathan Alexander of Skyview, meanwhile, took third at 285, winning by major decision over Jonathan Wilson of Aniak, 16-4.

Also for the Panthers, Hannah Hutchison placed fifth at 106. Teammate Sam Janorschke earned fifth at 132.
Nikiski’s Dakoda Neely, meanwhile, earned fifth at 113.
