Kenai Central splits hockey games in Anchorage

The Kenai Central hockey team split a pair of nonconference road games on Friday and Saturday in Anchorage.

On Saturday, the Kardinals fell to Service 6-5. The Cougars led 3-1 after one period and 6-4 after two periods.

Zack Zulkanycz had two goals and two assists for Kenai, while Zack Mese had two goals and an assist.

Keegan Remsen made 42 saves for Kenai.

“He was standing on his head for pretty much both of the games,” Kenai Central coach Pete Iverson said. “He’s definitely earning his keep back there.”

For Service, Jeremy Smith had two goals and two assists, Chris Burbage had a goal and two assists and Aaron McInnis had two goals. Nelson Carpentier made 14 saves.

“This helps our team realize its potential,” Iverson said. “They’re pretty excited.”

On Friday, the Kardinals received a hat trick from Zulkanycz in defeating host West 4-3 in overtime.

Zulkanycz ended the game with 5:25 left in overtime. He also tied the game with 1:26 left in regulation. His other goal came in the first period. Jake Eubank had the other goal for the Kardinals, while West had one goal in each period.

“Zack Mese, Zack Zulkanycz and Jake Eubank are our powerhouse line,” Iverson said. “They’re scoring most of our goals.

“Jake Eubank is only a freshman. He’s doing quite well for his age.”

Remsen faced 36 shots, including 15 in the third period.

Iverson also said Matt Morse had a great weekend on defense, and Russell Dukowitz did a good job leading Kenai’s second line.
