Soldotna hockey splits weekend road trip

The Soldotna hockey team split a pair of nonconference games in Anchorage on Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday, Soldotna topped West 5-2 at the McDonald Center in Eagle River. Josh Kerkvliet led the Stars with a hat trick.

“We had a lot better effort than we did (Friday),” Soldotna coach Aaron Swanson said. “It showed up on the scoreboard.”

West took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kieran Kuiper, but Cody Harvey, who made 12 saves, kept the slate clean until a late third-period goal by Dawson Ellingworth. Swanson said Harvey provided solid goaltending throughout the game.

The Stars also received goals from Dalton Pearson and Max Hegge. Swanson said Pearson played a great game.

Soldotna lost to Service 6-0 on Friday.

“We got outshot 32-16 for the game,” Swanson said. “We played OK as a team, but we didn’t play a great game by any means. Service is a really strong team, but we feel we could have done better.”

The Stars are now 3-1-1 overall.
