Kenai, Soldotna hockey alumni set for game

The Soldotna High School alumni will look to snap a four-game losing streak in the 16th annual Kenai Central High School - Soldotna High School Hockey Alumni Game on Friday at the Soldotna Sports Center at 7 p.m.

The Stars, who fell behind by a big deficit last year before mounting a comeback that came up short, are loaded with talent to try and stop Kenai’s streak.

The team will be led by Lee Green and Anthony Zurfluh. Green skated for the University of Alaska Anchorage and four ECHL teams, including the Alaska Aces. Zurfluh also played for the Aces.

The SoHi squad, coached by Dean Glick, will include six other players who played Junior A hockey — Hunter Sirois, Sam Tikka, Brad Duwe, Branden Fisher, Clayton Glick and James McEwen.

The Kenai team, coached by Gabe Gabriel, will be led by Kegan Kiel, who played Junior A hockey, and Adrian Borchgrevink, who played for the University of Oklahoma.

Rick Koch, the chair of the committee that organizes the game, said the no-check contest can get pretty competitive. Last year, 800 fans attended the game, and Koch said he hopes more show up next year.

“From my standpoint, it’s really a pleasure to watch the older and younger alumni get together to play a game,” he said.

Koch said winning players on each team will get their names engraved on the Richard Redford Cup. Beginning with the 13th annual game, this trophy was presented to the winning side.

The trophy is named for Richard Redford, who played at Kenai Central High School until Soldotna opened. He was the captain of the team and was in the first graduating class in 1981.

Koch also said Mo Redford, who recently passed away, will be honored after the game. Redford’s love of hockey was instrumental in bringing youth hockey to the peninsula. He coached youth hockey for years and taught the game to hundreds of people. Redford also showed his love of the game by playing as a defenseman with the Rusty Blades until the age of 70.

Koch said the proceeds of the game will be used to help Kenai players who otherwise would not be able to play hockey. Proceeds also will be used to help the Kards with travel.

In addition to hockey, intermission entertainment will include turkey bowling and sumo hockey between administrators from Kenai and Soldotna. Santa Claus also will make an appearance.

There also will be a beer and wine section.

Admission is $5 for seniors and students, and $10 for adults. The event sponsor is ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc., which provided $1,000 so player registration fees could be lowered from $25 to $10.
