Stars-Panthers snap 4-game skid

The Soldotna-Skyview team snapped a four-game losing streak in the Kenai Central High School - Soldotna High School Alumni Game with a 6-5 victory over the Kardinals on Friday at the Soldotna Sports Center.


The Kardinals went into the final period trailing 5-2 in front of about 500 fans, but rallied behind goalie Keegan Remsen, who made 16 saves on 17 shots after Nick Wirz started and made 32 saves on 37 shots.

Justin Herrmann, a 2010 graduate, started the scoring in the third period on assists from Holly Perkins and Brady Perkins.

Trevor Baldwin, a 2005 grad, then drew the Kards within one on an assist from Adrian Borchgrevink.

Nelson Kempf, a 2006 grad, then tied the game with about 4:00 to play on an assist from Brady Perkins and Baldwin.

The Stars notched the game-winner with 3:39 to play on the power play. Johnny Mills, a 2004 grad, scored on assists from Brad Duwe and Brandon Fisher.

Mike McGrath was able to preserve the win in the net. He made 23 saves on 26 shots. Kris Netschert, a 2007 grad, got the start and made 17 saves on 19 shots.

Baldwin, on assists from Kyle Coleman and Wally Ward, opened the scoring in the first period, but from there the Stars-Panthers took control.

Clayton Glick, a 2008 grad, scored on an assist from Mills and Hunter Sirois, a 2004 grad, scored on assists from Mills and Duwe to give the Stars-Panthers a 2-1 lead.

Brandon Fortney, a 2002 grad, tied the score before the end of the first period on an unassisted goal.

In the second period, the Stars continued to press the attack. Paddy Iverson, a 2006 graduate of Skyview, scored on an assist from Lee Green. Sirois lit the lamp again on assists from Paddy Iverson and Green, and Duwe pushed the lead to 5-2 before the close of the second on assists by Mills and Sirois.

The game is used to raise money for Kenai Central players that otherwise would not be able to play hockey. Money also is used to help the Kards with travel.

Rick Koch, the chair of the organizing committee, thanked Bob Frates for making an appearance as Santa Claus, and Peter Micciche for appearing on behalf of main event sponsor ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc.
