Stars open Clark Cochrane tourney with victory

The Soldotna boys basketball team opened up play at the Clark Cochrane Christmas Classic in Ketchikan on Tuesday with a 60-39 victory over North Surrey, British Columbia.

 

The Spartans had a tough time getting to Ketchikan, and once North Surrey got there Soldotna made things no easier.

North Surrey was warned its Monday flight from Seattle might not make it to Ketchikan, but the Spartans took the chance. They ended up spending the night in Sitka, then arrived at the gym in Ketchikan as Soldotna was already warming up for the 2:15 p.m. contest.

Soldotna senior Evan Withrow then jumped on the Spartans in the first period, scoring 13 of his game-high 25 points. By halftime, Withrow had 19 points as the Stars had a 32-20 lead.

Cory Carver took over in the second half, scoring 14 of his 16 points as the Stars coasted to victory.

The Stars move on to face Service today at 5:45 p.m. The Cougars pounded Wrangell 87-25 on Tuesday.
