East skaters defeat Soldotna

The East hockey team picked up a 6-3 victory over visiting Soldotna on Thursday in nonconference play.

The Stars, coming off Christmas break, fell behind 2-0 just four minutes into the game. Jarrett Urban, on an assist from Josh Kerkvliet, made it 2-1 halfway through the first period. The Thunderbirds scored again before the end of the first.

Soldotna came out quickly in the second period. Dalton Pearson, on assists from Jonas Perletti and Kerkvliet, scored the two quick goals to tie the game at 3.

East scored once before the close of the second period, then scored twice in the third period to salt away the game.

“It was our first game back after almost a month off, so we were a little rusty at times,” Soldotna coach Aaron Swanson said. “East is a good team, but we felt like we could have been a little more competitive with them.”

Cody Harvey had 27 saves for Soldotna, which put 22 shots on net.

The Stars play Chugiak on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
