Kenai cagers sweep Nikiski

Kenai’s Bailey Beeson tries to keep Nikiski’s Kinsey Martin from taking the ball from Kenai’s Cassie Ross in the third period Thursday at Nikiski High School.

The Kenai Central girls basketball team took the lead early in the first half and withstood a third-quarter charge from Nikiski to win 48-38 on Thursday in Nikiski.

Leading the charge from Kenai was senior guard Bailey Beeson, who contributed 13 points for the night. Junior guard Sydney Taylor had 11 points and senior point guard Carolyn Kiefer had nine, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the first half.

With 3:08 to go in the third quarter, Kenai had a 14-point lead, thanks to a layup from Taylor. Nikiski then scored nine unanswered points, which included a 3-pointer from senior guard Savannah Griffel, who had 11 points overall.

Other leading scorers from Nikiski included senior forward Kinsey Martin with 10 points, and freshman guard Rachel Thompson with eight.

The scoring run was part of a larger, 15-6 run that Nikiski was able to put together.

“They just started making shots, that’s all,” Nikiski head coach Scott Anderson said. “The shots weren’t going in much the first half, and that changed for a while in the third.”

Kenai head coach Stacia Rustad attributed a great game to the overall high scoring of the team, but said Nikiski’s third quarter streak was due to a lack of defensive effort.

“We didn’t change anything up, the team just had a bit of a mental breakdown,” Rustad said. “We were not playing defensive enough, and that allowed for some scores from Nikiski. We were not boxing in and they were wide open.

“Overall, we made shots and won the game. This is really just a morale booster, though. There are some good teams on the peninsula.”

Anderson also was pleased with his team’s effort.

“I’m proud of them, because we were better than we have been,” said Anderson. “We need to be boxing in the players and crashing the boards more, and try to get more turnovers, but they are doing good otherwise.”
