Withrow leads Stars past Grizzlies

Evan Withrow scored 19 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Soldotna boys past Grace Christian 70-69 on Thursday in the opening round of the Grace Christian Classic in Anchorage.

After a close first half, the Stars fell behind by as many as 12 points in the second half. Withrow brought his team back in the fourth quarter.

A rebound layup by Cory Carver, who had 13 points, tied the game at 65 before Grace had four free throws to take a 69-65 lead with 22 seconds left. Carver hit a 3-pointer for a 69-68 game with 17 seconds left before a Grace turnover gave the Stars the ball with 11 seconds left. Withrow hit a turnaround jumper with a second left to give his team the victory.

Tanner Fowler added 12 points for Soldotna.

The Stars continue play at the tournament today at 4:45 p.m. against Barrow.

In Wednesday action at the Mount St. Elias Classic in Yakutat, the Ninilchik boys lost to Yakutat 49-28. Jack Wheeler paced the Wolverines with 12 points. The Wolverines girls lost to the Sitka junior varsity 38-31. Kaylee Smith had 12 points for Ninilchik, while Esther Ehlers added 11 points.
