Withrow signs with South Dakota School of Mines

Soldotna senior Evan Withrow has signed to play basketball with the South Dakota School of Mines.

“Growing up as a coach’s kid, Evan loves to be in the gym and has a great understanding of the game,” Hardrocker head coach Jason Henry said in a released statement. “We feel with some increase in strength and with his shooting ability he’s exactly what we are looking for to start our recruiting class for 2012-13.”

Withrow, a 6-4 shooting guard, will pursue a degree in Metallurgical Engineering.

“We lose four starters next year, three of them from the guard position, so this is a good start to replacing those positions and filling the void,” Henry said.

Henry said he looks forward to the perimeter shooting Withrow will bring to the team. Withrow is the first player from Alaska to join the program.

The program is making a transition to NCAA Division II. Next year will be the first time the Hardrockers are eligible for the Division II tournament.

“We are needing to expand our recruiting efforts outside the region,” Henry said. “That is going to benefit next year’s team and the program in general.

“Anytime you can get a shooter like Evan in the program you have to be excited. We feel we have some pretty good big men on our squad and we have to continue to surround them with good shooters.”
