Tourney Roundup: Warrior Rumble, T-Bird Classic, Dimond Shootout

Posted: January 21, 2012 - 9:11pm

The East Thunderbirds won the Lady T-Bird Classic tournament in Anchorage on Saturday, beating the North Pole Patriots 65-55.
Kaillee Skjold of Soldotna and Meg Berry of Seward placed on the All-Tournament team. Skjold was also the tournament free-throw champion, making all 20 of her shots.
Soldotna lost 58-51 in semifinal action Friday in Anchorage to East. Skjold had 20 points for Soldotna, while Taria Page was East’s top scorer with 26 points. Soldotna was leading 22-20 at halftime, but East proved too strong.
Seward conceded an overtime game to North Pole on Friday, with a final score of 47-45.
Down three points at halftime, Seward outscored North Pole 15-9 in the third quarter, but the Patriots closed the gap to tie it at 40 at the end of regulation.
Berry led Seward with 21 total points, while the Patriots top scorer was Raegan Smothers with 17.
Soldotna beat Seward 52-38 in the third-place game Saturday.
Leading 24-18 at halftime, Soldotna poured on the points in the third quarter, outscoring Seward 15-9 and running away for the victory.
Soldotna had some help from Skjold, who put up 23 points in the game. Berry had 15 points to lead Seward’s effort.
Nikolaevsk Warrior Rumble
The Nikolaevsk boys team and Fort Yukon girls won the team championships in the Warrior Rumble tournament in Nikolaevsk.
The Tri-Valley boys earned runner-up honors, as did the Nikolaevsk girls. Third-place awards went to both the boys and girls Nenana teams.
The boys free-throw champion was Andre Tipikin of Nikolaevsk, who made 16 shots. Kandace Carroll of Fort Yukon was the girls free-throw champ, also making 16 shots.
The boys 3-point champion was Eric Mametieff from Nikolaevsk, sinking 10 shots. The girls 3-point champion award went to Teal O’Connor from Tri-Valley, as she made six shots.
Tyler Berg from Tri-Valley won MVP honors, as did Kandace Carroll from Fort Yukon.
Nikolaevsk won the sportmanship award for both its boys and girls teams.
Friday, the Nikolaevsk girls team overcame a first-half deficit to win 38-35 against Nenana.
In the first half, Nenana managed to lead the Warriors 21-13, thanks in part to Mariah Dela Rosa, who had 10 points total.
Nevertheless, Nikolaevsk turned up the heat in the second half to close the gap and take the victory. Nianiella Dorvall put in 11 points in the fourth quarter to lead the team, with a total of 15 points in the game.
Also Friday, the Nikolaevsk boys found themselves in a similar situation against Nenana. Leading by a single point at halftime, the Warriors put up a big third quarter, outscoring the Lynx 21-11, and going on to win the game, 63-50.
Andre Tipikin had a big night, scoring 30 points to lead Nikolaevsk. Justin Curlybear led Nenana with 12 points.
Also Friday, the Fort Yukon girls put a beating on Tri-Valley, with a final score of 56-10. In the boys game, it was the opposite, with Tri-Valley coming out on top 58-40 against Fort Yukon.
Saturday, the Nikolaevsk boys scored early and often, putting the game out of reach from Tri-Valley with a score of 67-48.
Andre Tipikin came up big for Nikolaevsk, as he tallied 27 points. Teammate Eric Mametieff came up with 18 points for himself.
Tri-Valley’s top scorer was Liam Juhl with 12 points.
The Nikolaevsk girls flexed their muscles against Tri-Valley on Saturday with a 40-23 win.
Nikolaevsk showed depth, as three girls on the team had similar numbers to lead them to the win. Sophia Kalugin had nine point total, while Megan Hickman and Nianiella Dorvall each had eight points.
Tri-Valley’s best scorer was Adene Arbuckle, who had 16 points.
Finally on Saturday, the Nenana boys beat Fort Yukon 53-35. The Fort Yukon girls beat Nenana 39-20.
Dimond Prep Shootout
If there was any chance the Unalaska boys had of beating Kenai in the seventh-place game, it disappeared in the third quarter. A 22-4 run effectively ended the game for Unalaska, as Colton Hayes and Bo Reilly led the Kardinals to a 56-27 win Saturday in Anchorage.
Hayes had 18 points in the game, while Reilly scored 12 total.
Leading 27-11 at halftime, Kenai ended the game and the tournament on a bright note, after losses to Dimond and Ketchikan.
Unalaska’s top shooter was JJ Fernandez with 11 points.
