Friday hoops roundup: Kenai girls notch win

The Kenai Kardinals girls held Houston to low scoring and won Friday night 41-27 at Houston in nonconference action.

Morgan Wensley led Kenai with 12 points. Savannah James had a huge effort in Houston’s loss, coming up with 19 of the team’s 27 points. 

Houston held a 17-14 lead at halftime, but Kenai stormed back in the third, outscoring the Hawks 12-3, and adding another 15 points in the final quarter. 

Houston boys 58, Kenai 56

The Kenai boys attempted to rally back after an early deficit, but came up short in a close game at Houston.

Trailing by as many as 17 points early in the second quarter, the Kardinals outscored the Hawks 37-27 in the second half, with some help from AJ Hull, who had 23 points to lead the team.

Scott Kramer had 25 points to lead Houston’s effort. 

Grace boys 67, Nikiski 49

The Grace Christian Grizzlies took out the Nikiski Bulldogs in Anchorage in Southcentral Conference action. 

The Nikiski boys were trailing by only two points entering the fourth quarter, after outscoring Grace 14-8 in the third. However, the Bulldogs were blown away in the final quarter, outscored 30-14, with some big shots by Hans Karlberg of Grace. Karlberg ended the game with 27 points. 

Nikiski’s top scorer was Lucas Herrin, with 21 points. Teammate Colton Anderson also chipped in 17 points.

Grace girls 44, Nikiski 27

The Grizzlies had a big third quarter at home to beat the Bulldogs in Southcentral Conference action.

Trailing 23-15 at halftime, Nikiski attempted a comeback, but Grace outscored them 16-5 to effectively end the game. Heidi Eckmann had 12 points to lead Grace. 

Savannah Griffel and Rachel Thompson had seven points apiece to lead Nikiski’s effort. 

CIA boys 55, Seldovia 36

Levi Grinestaff had 18 points and David Reischach added 17 as the Eagles notched a Peninsula Conference victory.

Seldovia plays with a coed team. Freshman Nathan Suydam had 10 points, while eighth-graders Aidan Philpot and Calem Collier combined for 17 points.

Seldovia coach Mark Janes said Sarah O’Leary also made contributions in the paint for the Sea Otters.

CIA led by six at halftime, but pulled away in the third quarter by outscoring the Sea Otters 12-3.

Cordova girls 46, Seward 41

The host Wolverines notched a Southcentral Conference victory over the Seahawks.

Angie Kelly had 14 points for Cordova, while Mallory Merritt had 13 points. For Seward, Meg Berry had 13, while Tessa Adelmann chipped in eight points.

Seward boys 54, Cordova 34

Jalen Terry pumped in 25 points for the Seahawks as they picked up a Southcentral Conference victory in Cordova.

Logan Clemmens pitched in 12 points for Seward, while William Romehildt and Keith Nolan each had seven for Cordova.
