CIA sweeps Lumen Christi

In boys game, Eagles tag Archangels with 1st conference loss

The Cook Inlet Academy girls and boys swept Lumen Christi on Monday in Peninsula Conference action at Cook Inlet Academy.

Both the CIA girls and Lumen boys came into the night undefeated in the league. The Eagles stayed that way with a 51-20 victory. The Archangels lost 83-69 in overtime.

In the girls game, the Eagles grabbed a 19-5 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Megan Bauder paced CIA with 15 points.

In the boys game, the Eagles played what coach Justin Franchino said was far and away his team’s best game of the year to improve to 4-2 in the league.

“For the first time all season, we looked like a basketball team,” Franchino said. “We moved the basketball and worked together.”

The Eagles lost star David Reischach to his third foul with just three minutes left in the first quarter. Reischach sat for the rest of the half, but CIA was able to come back to trail 25-22 at halftime. Koebryn Mlynarik, who took over point guard in the game, had 13 of his 19 points in the second quarter to keep the Eagles in the game.

In the second half, Reischach came back and took over. He scored 12 points in the third quarter, eight in the fourth and 12 in overtime. Reischach hit 10 of 10 from the line in overtime. CIA went 16 of 17 from the line in the extra frame. Franchino said the Eagles got up early in overtime and the Archangels kept fouling and attempting 3-pointers, letting CIA expand its lead.

“They’re probably the toughest defensive team in the conference,” Franchino said. “For us to get that many points on them means something.”
