SoHi cagers sweep Homer

Stars boys come back from 11 down to claim NLC win

The visiting Soldotna girls and boys basketball teams notched Northern Lights Conference victories in Homer on Tuesday.

The SoHi girls rolled to a 57-24 victory. Julie Litchfield had 14 points, while Kaillee Skjold had 13.

The boys game went right down to the wire, with the Stars pulling out a 44-41 win.

The Mariners led 23-18 at halftime and stretched the lead to as much as 11 in the third quarter before leading 33-24 after three quarters.

Soldotna quickly made up the gap in the fourth quarter. Cory Carver nailed a 3-pointer with 5 minutes, 40 seconds, to play to tie the game at 33.

Soldotna had a 41-39 lead and the ball with a minute to play, but Homer came up with a steal and called timeout with 31 seconds left. The Mariners worked the ball down to big man Devon Kennelty, who missed the first shot but got his own rebound and scored. The Stars called timeout with 20 seconds left.

With 4.7 seconds left, Carver missed a shot but was fouled. He hit 1 of 2 from the line for a 42-41 lead. The Mariners tried a long pass to Kennelty, but Evan Withrow intercepted for SoHi. Withrow was fouled and made both free throws. A desperation heave from Homer missed at the buzzer.

Kennelty had 11 points for the Mariners, while Quinn Daugharty had 10. Noah Fowler paced the Stars with 12 points.
