Thursday hoops: CIA girls, boys, Nikolaevsk girls, boys win at NIT

The Cook Inlet Academy girls took off in the first half to easily win against Su-Valley 41-21 on Thursday in the Nenana Invite.
CIA had the game well in hand by halftime with the score at 24-7.
Cara Nelson and Nicole Moffis each contributed nine points to lead CIA, with Keely Powers adding eight points as well.
Jeannie Jurasek from Su-Valley had 10 points.
The CIA girls face Fort Yukon in the semifinals today at 3:30 p.m.
CIA boys 58, Su-Valley 55, OT
Keefe O’Dell hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in overtime to lift the Eagles in the NIT.
CIA coach Justin Franchino said it was the first 3-pointer O’Dell hit this season. O’Dell was trapped in the corner when he took the shot.
“I almost called timeout,” Franchino said. “I was thinking, ‘This isn’t good.’”
After hitting the shot, O’Dell told his coach he was practicing that shot in warmups and was confident he could make it.
The CIA boys move on to play Fort Yukon today at 5 p.m. in the semifinals.
Nikolaevsk girls 68,
Effie Cochran 43
Sophia Kalugin had 23 points as the Warriors won at the Nenana Invite on Thursday.
Nianiella Dorvall added 16 for Nikolaevsk, while Kayla Stafford had 15 and Kilina Klaich had six.
Nikolaevsk will face Nenana in the semifinals today at 6:30 p.m.

Andre Tipikin and Anthony Yakunin each had monster nights to lift the Warriors into the semifinals of the NIT.
Tipikin pumped in 47 points, while Yakunin had 17.
The Warriors will face Nenana at 8 p.m. today.
Nome girls 48, Kenai 46
The Kardinals lost a close game Thursday at the Lady Lynx Prep Shootout Tournament at Dimond.
Senior Bailey Beeson had 17 points to lead Kenai’s effort, with Carolyn Kiefer adding 12 points of her own.
Devynn Johnson put up 17 points to lead the Nanooks, and Dylan Johnson had 13.
Kenai will play South Anchorage today at 4:30.
Ninilchik girls 33, Akiachak 20
The Wolverines won Thursday in the Lena B. Ferguson Memorial Tournament in Chevak. They will play at 2 p.m. today.
Ester Ehlers powered Scammon Bay to the win with 14 points.
The Ninilchik boys did not play Thursday. They will continue play in the tourney today.
Seahawk Classic

The Homer girls and boys notched victories over Skyview in the opening round of the Seahawk Classic in Seward.
The Homer girls notched a 44-20 victory over Skyview. Haley Oliver had 17 points for Homer, while Tayla Cabana added 10 points. Chelsey Ahlers paced Skyview with nine points.
The Homer boys grabbed a 41-35 victory over Skyview. Devon Kennelty paced the Panthers with 10 points, while Albert White had 18 for Skyview. DJ Collier, Jordan Jones and Preston Penrod all fouled out of the game for the Panthers.

Also at the Seahawk Classic, the Valdez and Seward squads split.

Barrow Invitational

The Kenai Central boys lost to Barrow 83-47 on Thursday in Barrow. Colin Long had 32 points for Barrow.

The Valdez girls notched a 48-42 victory over Seward. Caitlyn Aulde had 16 points for Valdez, while Alex Derifield chipped in 14. For Seward, Jasmine Perea had 13 points.

The Seward boys won 46-39. Matthew Moore pumped in 18 points for the Seahawks, while Jeff Buchanan had 10 points. For Valdez, Max Duffy had 14 points, while Glacier Rohner had 11 points.

There was no score reported from the Kenai boys game in Barrow against the Barrow boys.
